Death Penalty Events

Starvin' for Justice 2006
The 13th Annual Fast and Vigil to Abolish the Death Penalty
U.S. Supreme Court
July 29th -- June 2nd, 2006

WHO:
Anyone who is against the Death Penalty -- seasoned abolitionists and those new to the movement alike. Come, learn some new tricks and share your own, make an impact and meet others who work for the cause.... Abolition work made fun!
WHAT: A four day vigil maintaining a presence at SCOTUS, the Supreme Court Of The United States. Some of the participants fast during this time, but fasting is not required. We encounter thousands of visitors to the Court and share our message that no matter how you slice it, the death penalty is BAD PUBLIC POLICY. Much of the time is spent talking to individuals and creating visibilty. Several larger events are held at key times during the event to highlight specific concerns, with a series of speakers each evening to educate, enlighten and entertain…

WHERE: In front of SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) on Capital Hill in Washington, DC. With much gratitude to co-sponsorship from the United Methodist Church General Board of Church and Society, we continue to enjoy access to air conditioned space for HQ, rest rooms, etc. immediately across the street, at the United Methodist Church building. It’s Direct Action made easy!
WHEN: 12 am, June 29 to midnight, July 2. To attend the full event, plan to arrive on June 28, and depart on July 3, 2006

WHY: The purpose of this event is to maintain a presence at SCOTUS between the dates of the anniversaries of when the death penalty was ruled unconstitutional in practice in 1972, and when new laws were upheld in 1976. While the Court may not be in session and Congress is in recess, this presence is more than symbolic.
COST: Minimal - mainly transportation to DC and personal expenses. We have dirt-cheap lodging!

 Virginia Journey of Hope 2006
October 13-29

Journey of Hope...from Violence to Healing is an organization that is led by murder victim family members that conducts public education speaking tours and addresses alternatives to the death penalty.

Journey "storytellers" come from all walks of life and represent the full spectrum and diversity of faith, color and economic situation. They are real people who know first hand the aftermath of the insanity and horror of murder. They recount their tragedies and their struggles to heal as a way of opening dialogue on the death penalty in schools, colleges, churches and other venues.

The Journey spotlights murder victim's family members who choose not to seek revenge, and instead select the path of love and compassion for all of humanity. Forgiveness is seen as a strength and as a way of healing. The greatest resources of the Journey are the people who are a part of it.

In 2006, the Journey of Hope is coming to Virginia! Watch this space for additional information regarding venues and times. For more information or to volunteer your help, please contact office@vadp.org.
