JARRATT, Va.—Roger Mason knows at least
10 people who work inside Greensville Correctional Center, and one
person who’s serving time there for beating his mother with a pipe.
Mason helped build the center, which now holds an average 3,055 inmates.
“I was the guy who had to go in and lay the floor tiles while 20 to
30 inmates were walking around, and I had nothing with me but my tool
belt,” said Mason.
Now working at Babb’s Country Cooking, about a half-mile from the
prison and next to Jarratt’s only stop light, Mason said the town will
never again see a project the size and scope of the correctional
facility.
