Senate bill to end Virginia’s death penalty carried over until next year

A bill that would abolish the death penalty in Virginia was put off for a year on Wednesday by the Senate Judiciary Committee. Arguing that innocent people have been sent to death row, that it is too expensive and that it is used only in third world and authoritative countries, Sen. Scott Surovell, D-Fairfax, argued the death penalty should be ended and urged his bill abolishing it be reported out of committee.
